When you perform shock treatments in an empty room with ozone, where you put the machine matters. A window sill ozone machine sits in an open window and pulls in fresh outside air. A tabletop unit sits inside and reuses the same room air. That difference can change how high the ozone concentration reaches. Why does that matter? Because some applications, in particular killing mites, bed bugs, and mold, require a higher p.p.m. ozone concentration to obtain favorable results.
What is a Window Sill Ozone Generator?
Our ForeverOzone “Large Room” ozone generator and our Window Sill ozone generators are compact quartz tube ozone generators manufactured to sit on a windowsill. The line includes 10g, 15g, 15g with fan, 30g, and 60g mini quartz tube models. The machine faces the room, while the intake side draws air from outside the window screen, from the built-in fan (for the 10g and 15g models with a fan), or from an external blower that a contractor (or homeowner acting as a contractor) places outside the structure blowing fresh air in.
Why Fresh Outside Air Helps Ozone Output
An ozone generator makes ozone from the oxygen in the air passing through it. Ozone generators don’t create ozone; they convert the oxygen content in the air into ozone! This is an important distinction to note.
Inside a closed room during a shock treatment, the oxygen content in the air is quickly turned into ozone. Outside air provides an endless supply of oxygen to create high concentrations of ozone. In our experience, a machine fed fresh outside air builds a higher ozone level in the room than the same kind of machine sitting on a table. Air that is warm and very humid can lower the output of any ozone generator, so a cool, dry day is the best time to run one.
Quartz Tube Technology
Every Window Sill unit uses quartz tubes, not ceramic plates. The electrodes are kept apart from the corona by quartz glass, which helps the machine keep steady output over a long life. Learn more in our guide to quartz tube vs ceramic plate ozone generators.
When a Tabletop Unit Still Makes Sense
Not every room has a window that works. For an inner room, a closet. Our ozone generators will still produce nano metal-free ozone, but you won’t get as high a concentration as you would if you fed your ozone machine a continuous flow of oxygen. What concentrations are we talking about here? Tests performed over the years with an ozone meter suggest .02-.05 ppm max if you are not feeding your ozone generator fresh air. With fresh air? Over .10ppm. If it’s below 50 degrees and humidity is under 30%? Over .20 ppm. Our Large Room quartz tube ozone generator is a good fit for inside rooms. But even that unit, which only weighs 3 lbs, can sit on a windowsill up against the screen. .
How to Size Your Shock Treatment
- Each $79 quartz tube machine covers up to 1,000 sq ft with 8 ft ceilings.
- Homes under 2,500 sq ft: use 2 machines.
- Homes over 2,500 sq ft: use 3 machines. You can get 3 for $210.
For a window setup, see the 30g Window Sill quartz tube ozone generator or the 15g mini quartz tube ozone generator with fan.
Safety First: Unoccupied Spaces Only
Ozone shock treatment is for empty spaces only. It is not for breathing and is not an air purifier. People, pets, and plants must be out of the space while the machine runs.
- Close inside doors to the treated area and post a note so no one walks in.
- When the treatment ends, turn the machine off from outside the room if you can.
- Open windows and doors and let the space air out before going back in.
- If you still smell a strong ozone odor, keep airing it out longer.
